E-commerce Website Development in India: UPI, GST & COD

Indian online buyers pay with UPI, expect GST invoices, and still use COD. Here is how to build an e-commerce website that matches how India actually shops.

An e-commerce website copied from a US Shopify playbook will leak sales in India. Buyers want UPI in two taps, a GST invoice for reimbursements, pin-code based delivery ETAs, and often Cash on Delivery. This is the development checklist we use for Indian stores.

1. Payments: UPI is not optional

UPI now handles the majority of digital retail payments in India. Your checkout must support UPI intent (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm) plus cards and net banking. Razorpay, PayU, and Cashfree are the common gateways. Test the full flow on Android Chrome — that is your real production environment. Offer one-click UPI on the cart page, not only at the last step.

2. GST invoices and HSN codes

B2B and many B2C buyers will not reorder if invoices are wrong. Your store should:

  • Capture GSTIN on checkout for business orders
  • Generate tax invoices with HSN/SAC, CGST/SGST or IGST
  • Handle intra-state vs inter-state tax automatically
  • Export reports your CA can file without a spreadsheet nightmare

3. Shipping, COD, and RTO reality

Integrate Shiprocket, Delhivery, or Shadowfax for pin-code serviceability. Show delivery dates before payment. COD still converts in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities — but RTO (return to origin) can destroy margins. Use OTP-on-delivery, prepaid discounts (UPI ₹20 off), and block high-RTO pin codes.

“In Indian e-commerce, checkout is a trust product: UPI, GST, and delivery promise — in that order.”

4. Mobile-first storefront performance

Most sessions are on mid-range Androids. Heavy sliders and uncompressed product photos kill conversion. Use Next.js or a headless storefront, WebP images, and a sticky Add to Cart bar. Support Hindi UI labels if your catalogue is regional.

5. What e-commerce development costs in India

A solid custom or headless store with UPI, GST, and shipping typically lands between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹6 lakh. Marketplace-only selling is cheaper but you do not own the customer. If brand and repeat purchase matter, own the website.

Conclusion

E-commerce website development in India succeeds when engineering follows local buying behaviour. FastUI Labs builds stores around UPI, GST invoicing, and logistics — not generic global templates. Get those three right and paid ads finally have a page worth sending traffic to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which payment gateway is best for Indian e-commerce?

Razorpay, PayU, and Cashfree are the usual shortlist. Prioritise UPI intent, cards, net banking, and easy GST-compliant settlements.

Is Cash on Delivery still necessary in India?

For many categories outside metros, yes. Offer COD with OTP verification and pin-code checks to cut return fraud.
